Children's Recreation Project

There are at present around 2 million blind people in the UK, with approximately 24,000 being blind or partially sighted children - 600 of which live in Surrey.

More than half of visually impaired children are not able to join in PE lessons, and are often asked just to score or simply to watch.

Many visually impaired children, particularly those in mainstream education, who are keen to take part in activities outside school, are unable to find a local club that can cater for their particular needs.

Sometimes, children with Visual Impairment, and their parents are not aware of what is on offer in the way of accessible recreation. Sometimes, transport and cost, can pose problems too.

SAVI's Children's Recreation Project, has been set up to create more sporting and recreational opportunities for children and young people in Surrey. To provide information and, working with other agencies, to promote inclusion and accessibility for all.

SAVI runs a comprehensive programme of events and activities, for children and young people, within Surrey. Over the past six months we have been to Audio-Described shows in London, Audio-Described football matches at Woking FC, Dry Ski days at Sandown ski Centre, Outdoor Pursuits at High Ashurst near Leatherhead and Soft Play and swimming to name a few.

Our fun packed 2009 schedule of events is here, but keep looking for regular updates, Stella Black, our Children's Recreation Coordinator has been talking to lots of people and there will be a wide variety of activities to get involved in. We are also working with Action for Blind People on developing an Actionnaires club in Surrey, during 2008. Actionnaires offers a variety of sports including basketball, athletics, swimming, climbing and many more. The clubs offer different levels of sporting opportunities, whether it’s just joining in and having fun or competing in local and national competitions.

With the Paralympics in London in 2012, this is a good time to develop hidden talents.
